Who Are We
FreeTeknoToronto is not a sound system per-se but a coalition of sound systems (Smerk, Subransit, Freespace Collective, and Next Offensive) and a number of unaffiliated individuals. We have committed ourselves to throwing underground, free to cheap parties with a DIY attitude.

Inspired by the Freetekno scene in Europe (www.network23.org/) which started off as a reaction to the growing commercialization of the old Rave scene. It ended up moving far past what the rave scene had been. It became a true movement, with a community that existed outside of the parties and wich resulted in a degree of social chance, at least for the people involved. Unfortunately it was broad sided by harsh police measures, eventually resulting in France and other places with criminal charges being laid on anyone throwing free parties of any kind.

Nonetheless, the movement is growing, and has spread into North America (come.to/teknode-usa/) also coinciding with the increased commercialization and eventual decline of the Rave scene here. Freeteknotoronto is a node of the movement here in the Toronto. It is a connection to the global network as a whole, as well as a local network, which is steadily growing and involving more local sound systems.

Why We Do It
Everyone is involved for different reasons. Some do it to promote social change. Some to promote styles of music which are too underground to belong in large corporate venues. Others are involved just because of the thrill of breaking into old warehouses and scouting locations for bush parties and the like. But everyone involved has something in common: adislike of the corporate music scene which exists not for the music, but in order to make money. As a result of that, freetekno promotes a do it yourself attitude where everything can be done cheaply by avoiding paid professionals (superstar DJs, expensive sound and lighting crews, etc) and corporate venues. Sometimes the group as a whole gathers to throw larger or more complicated events which none of the sound systems alone could pull off. Often though, we help each other throw our own events and work together to spread the word about all of them.
